Chapter Twenty-Six

Jacqueline

“Good morning, Amelia,” Jacqueline greets her neighbor over the back garden fence.

“Good morning to you, too,” Amelia responds brightly.

“Did Agnes mention anything about the opera last night?”

Shifting the flower basket in her arm, Amelia replies, “All she said was that she had a very nice time. Did Grady say anything to you?”

“As he doesn’t live here anymore, I can hardly ask without him accusing me of prying into his personal life. More’s the pity.”

“Agnes did say that she and Grady are having supper again with the royal family on Sunday. Surely, that’s good news.”

“Most definitely.” Jacqueline nods her head. “I’d best be going or the muffins I have in the oven will burn. I’ll talk to you soon, Amelia.” Jacqueline doesn’t go into the house, though. Instead, she scurries around the side yard, pulls her telephone out of her pocket, and places a call. “Charlotte, it’s me.”

“Is something wrong?” the queen asks. “You sound frantic.”

“I feel a little frantic. Did you know that Grady and Agnes are dining with your family again on Sunday?”

“I didn’t. Who invited them?”

“I have no idea. But I’m excited, aren’t you?”

“You know I am. I bet Bree will be livid. Having Grady here when we meet Jordon for the first time will certainly take the wind out of her sails, don’t you think?”

“Charlotte, that’s not very nice. Remember, we decided that we’re fine if the kids don’t wind up with each other.”

“As long as they give each other a chance first. Now that it’s going to be a party, do you and Georges want to join us?”

“Not on your life. Georges is finally calming down about Agnes. I don’t want to incite his nerves again. We’ll stay home, but call me the very minute supper is over.”

“You’ve got yourself a deal, my friend. In fact, if something truly exciting happens, I’ll call you during supper.”
